5 Ways to Help Your Slow Computer

Throughout my time as a computer tech I see a lot of people that don’t really know how to take care of their computers. I have found 5 things that I would recommend anyone practice to help keep their computer in top shape. Here they are.
There really is a lot that can be done to keep your computer going at top speed and we are going to discuss the basics here.
Disk Space - A staple of fixing the problem when a customer calls and says I need computer optimization is to keep the disk as free as possible of "junk" (that is a very technical term by the way). By that I mean all the files that accumulate in your computer over time. There are utility programs out there that can delete the files that are not needed and there will be no concerns that anything valuable is in jeopardy.
File Order - Anytime a new program is accessed or added or deleted from your hard drive the parts of that file get scattered over the hard drive in a broader and broader pattern. As these files get spread out it becomes harder and more time consuming to reassemble them. There are ways available to bring all the parts of these files back together and put them in nearly a solid block again so the hard drive can easily access the information.
Spyware is Spying - The informal definition of spyware is a program that  will do bad things to your computer and things that will most likely cost you money in the long run or the short run. What happens is that a person will go to a site or down load a piece of inoccent looking software and they will click "I Agree" to some terms without even looking at the terms. The spyware is loaded and you end up sharing all kinds of information about your surfing habits or worse.  Sometimes way worse.
Disc Errors - If you don’t fix disc Errors on my computer it can be the death of a computer as they can get so bad that the hard drive will no longer function. What happens is that little sections on a hard drive can go bad and it is possible to loose data that is there. There is software that can detect these errors and either fix them or move the data and mark the bad spot so it is not used any longer. This needs to be done regularly especially on a older computer where errors are more prone to happen.
External hard Drive - because your hard drive is constantly being accessed the ideal situation is to have only the most used files on the main hard drive. That way the amount of information accessed is minimized. Ideally you want to have a separate storage space for all the rarely used files. Files like pictures and music should definitely be stored on another hard drive as this makes for a lean mean main drive and otherwise you only go get the info when you need it.
Many companies that work on computers will provide the hardware to make the changes you need and you can also go to many computer stores to have them install the new hardware as needed. Just make sure you are not sold a bill of goods that is not necessary. Other than upgrades to memory or unless the computer mother board is burnt out, in most cases upgrades should be minor.  Find someone qualified to ask that doesn’t have a profit motive for their advise.
